State Leaders Inspire Students: Representative Scott and Senator Perillo Visit for National Civics Day 2025
Posted on 11/04/2025

State Representative Tony Scott and State Senator Jason Perillo recently visited Mr. Parkhurst’s Political Science class to commemorate National Civics Day 2025 with an engaging and insightful discussion.

The representatives began by addressing the current challenges facing the federal government, noting how much of their work at the state level is connected to the ongoing federal government shutdown. They explained that while the federal situation creates uncertainty, their roles in the Connecticut House and Senate involve actively working to pass legislation that benefits their constituents.

Representative Scott shared with the students that the most rewarding part of his job is using his power to pass laws that have a positive impact on the people of Monroe. He encouraged the students to be proactive in speaking out on issues that matter to them. “Every single one of you can do the same thing,” Scott emphasized. “You don’t have to be a voter, you might not be 18 yet, it doesn’t matter. I represent each and every single one of you... that is your power, your power is to speak.”

Senator Perillo offered a behind-the-scenes look at the legislative process, explaining how sometimes multiple pieces of legislation are combined into one bill to streamline approval. He highlighted the importance of committee work in shaping laws and answered numerous thoughtful questions from the students. Perillo reinforced the idea that individual voices matter, stating, “Even if there is one person, that matters.”

Both leaders stressed the importance of communication and advised students that the best way to reach them is through their official state representative emails rather than social media channels. Their visit provided a meaningful opportunity for students to connect with their local elected officials and better understand the impact of civic engagement at the state level.
