MONROE, CT —On October 14, forty Masuk High School students traveled to Southern Connecticut State University for an immersive campus experience designed to give them a closer look at college academics, campus culture, and the opportunities available within the field of psychology. The visit was part of Masuk’s growing partnership with Southern, which allows students to earn college credits directly through several Masuk courses—including the popular psychology elective.

During the trip, students toured Southern’s campus, exploring key buildings, student spaces, and academic areas that many may one day call home. The highlight of the day was an in-depth visit to the Psychology Department, where Masuk students were welcomed into active research labs. There, they observed how college students are studying the effects of alcohol and drugs on fetal development using mice, gaining a unique behind-the-scenes look at scientific research in action.

The learning didn’t stop in the labs. Doctoral students took time to sit with Masuk’s group, sharing insights into their own thesis projects and academic journeys. Students were especially intrigued by studies exploring questions like Why do people settle for unhealthy or toxic partners? These conversations offered a rare window into advanced psychological research and the types of questions graduate students seek to answer.

Masuk students also had the chance to step into an actual college classroom, participating in discussions alongside Southern psychology majors. This collaborative experience allowed them to practice critical thinking, ask questions, and engage with material at a collegiate level which is an exciting preview of what future coursework could look like.

The day ended with a great lunch on campus, giving students time to relax, reflect, and enjoy the social side of college life. Many students left feeling energized and inspired, with a clearer picture of what their futures might hold.

This field trip not only strengthened Masuk’s partnership with Southern Connecticut State University but also gave students an invaluable sneak peek at the academic rigor and community they can expect in the next chapter of their education. For students already earning college credit through Masuk’s aligned courses, the visit reinforced the real-world connections between their high school learning and collegiate success.
