MONROE, Conn. — Masuk High School celebrated Veterans Day with a meaningful shift in tradition, holding its annual observance on Wednesday, November 12th, the day after the official national holiday. Principal Steve Swensen explained that adjusting the date allows the school to better honor local heroes.
"This adjusted date allows us to honor and include the veterans in our community who have other commitments on the holiday itself," said Swensen, "while still offering our students a meaningful opportunity to learn from them."
Masuk was proud to host several Monroe veterans for the morning. From 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the library, these guests spent time with small groups of students. The veterans shared their personal stories and engaged the students in thoughtful conversations about their service and experiences.
To conclude the special event, the veterans were treated to a luncheon prepared by Masuk’s own Culinary Arts students. This meal served as an additional, hands-on way for students to express their deep gratitude for their guests' service.
